Comment:
No, they aren't mutually exclusive. What annoys me about the irssi
behaviour is that if I intend to hit alt-tab but miss alt I know have an
irssi input line filled with a fair amount of entirely useless and
undesired text (the fact that I can clear it with a single keypress/combo
is irrelevant).
Similarly, I'm not sure the benefit (and cognitive load required to use
the feature) is worth the potential annoyance. What if the last person
isn't who you want to address now, you now have an input area with the
wrong nickname in it that you have to clear (and you can't just hit tab to
cycle to the next name like you can with normal tab completion).
Either way, a plugin can likely add this feature and I'm not sure more
than that is useful. The plugin could even keep multiple such nicknames
and tab cycle between them, and even allow the user to set a pre-populated
list of names to include in the list (in case you frequently talk to the
same people).
