 I believe we have occasionally had bugs which incorrectly propagated
 aliases to local storage, though I'm unsure if those ever made it into a
 release (as opposed to just being in development code). It is possible,
 assuming that made it into a release, that that is what happened.
 Alternatively you did set an alias for them at some point by accident. It
 is even possible that Google Talk uses the full name from your address
 book as a server stored alias for the buddy for you automatically, which
 will override any nickname they set.

 There may be a real bug here, but so far there isn't enough evidence to
 indicate that.
