Comment:

 Groups *are* tags on any protocol that supports having a buddy in more
 than one group. The interface allowing you to easily add a user to another
 group is all that's missing in pidgin, and a plugin can easily add that in
 the same way pidgin now has the "Move To" right-click menu.
