 I did disable networkmanager and it all works flawlessly. You're right
 that the tone of the linked post is totally unappropriate but he does have
 a point. This is a bug and its resolution shouldn't be "worksforme" but
 "worksforeveryone". There are cases where you can't use networkmanager all
 the time, for example with specific dialed connections. But you wouldn't
 uninstall it either because sometimes you use it for wireless/cabled
 access. The solution can't be to enable/disable some other piece of
 software for pidgin to work. All in all thanks for looking into this, I
 don't need networkmanager at all so it does "workforme" anyways ;P
