 I am also experiencing this bug. Here are my observations:

 * I have 3 yahoo accounts enabled. One of them is really old, and i have
 about 250 buddies on my list, and the other 2 are new and clean (about
 10-15 buddies). When i globally change an avatar, the 2 new accounts
 change immediately, but the old and populated one still has the previous
 avatar. If i check that avatar link, the new icon appears, but it's not
 visible in my blist.
 This behavior is true if i repeat the avatar change.. and i know this is
 true for a long time now..

 Note: '''sometimes''', one of the 2 "new" accounts (the more populated one
 between the 2) is having same problems too.

 For all 3 accounts (ie: repeated 3 times in debug window) i have the line:

 * When I change an avatar, for the first ~10-15 seconds, the sent messages
 are lost and never received (i tried messaging me after an avatar change..

 Note: My outgoing messages are also lost when i go online, for about the
 same amount of time (10-15 seconds). (All sent messages are simply not
 received by other ends). I think I'll file a separate bug for this one.

 * My buddies using official client don't see my new avatar. BUT, if they
 reconnect to messenger, they see it. Also, those who come online after I
 changed see my new avatar.
 I (using latest pidgin) don't see my new avatar even at reconnect for my
 old and big account (~250 buddies), but when my 2nd account has this
 problem and i reconnect, it refreshes. (but only that account. my main one
 still having problems)


 I think this defect should be left open..
