 Just for the records... (Maybe it has some relevance)
 I took some pictures and edited them with GIMP, saved as .png files,
 96x96; And the problems appears to be gone.

 I have changed my buddy icon several times, and the refresh time for the
 buddy icon (the time that a contact can see the change) is very short.

 I will keep making some test and post results. (I will test the resized
 images on Kopete as well, as  I had the same problem 'black buddy icon' no
 matter what picture I used on kopete).
