Comment:

 Is the 'checking for Perl compile flags' test the first/only perl-related
 configure test that fails? If so, that sounds like you are missing some of
 the perl build related modules (specifically ExtUtils::Embed). If not,
 what other tests are failing? Can you attach your config.log file (from a
 run without you manually setting perl-related flags/variables)?
