 I have Pidgin Portable installed on a USB drive.

 It works great.

 If I eject this USB drive with Pidgin running, I would expect that it
 would close (perhaps gracefully, perhaps not).  Closing seems the logical
 action when the USB drive is ejected.

 However the actual behavior is that Pidgin continues to run just fine.

 Is this is a bug or a feature?

 How is it able to do this?
