Comment:

 I will confirm what font my friend is using (this may take a while,
 though, since he is on a plane to India). Mine is Arial Unicode MS. It
 does have the glyphs for the Devanagari font, as we can see from the
 screenshot (the message I typed does show up properly).

 Also, we tried the experiment with "Show formatting on incoming messages"
 turned off. The problem still persists. I see what I type properly, but
 not what I receive.
