Comment:

 Can you track this memory usage down to a specific protocol or action you
 are taking in pidgin? Does pidgin use a growing amount of memory if you
 run 'pidgin -n' and leave it unconnected? Try testing disabling (or better
 not enabling in the first place) your IRC account and seeing if that
 avoids this issue.

 As a side note, thank you for the detailed bug report and the data
 collection efforts you have gone through so far.
