 You logged in to some other machine and used X forwarding to the machine
 with pidgin and that worked? Was that with or without the manual prefs.xml
 tweaking? The machine you are running X on has nothing to do with what
 libraries pidgin uses.

 Yes, this is something pidgin should fix.
