Comment:
"What version of cyrus sasl2? What version of the cyrus-sasl2 base
modules/plugins?"
libsasl2-2 and libsasl2-modules are both version
"2.1.22.dfsg1-23ubuntu3.1".
"If you 'temporarily' remove the /usr/lib/sasl2/*digestmd5* modules ...
does Pidgin crash at startup?"
After deleting libdigestmd5.a, libdigestmd5.la, libdigestmd5.so,
libdigestmd5.so.2, and libdigestmd5.so.2.0.22, Pidgin seems to start ok.
"What pidgin plugins and third-party protocol plugins do you have loaded?"
I'm not sure what you mean.
I have installed only the "bare minimum" available in the Ubuntu
repositories, (packages pidgin, pidgin-data, and libpurple-bin). I
currently have also pidgin-libnotify and pidgin-dbg installed, but
removing these does not fix the problem.
I am using only MSN and ICQ protocols. I have never used XMPP, and
deleting the ~/.purple folder (deleting all protocol plugin settings) does
not fix the problem.
My /src/lib/purple-2:
autoaccept.so libjabber.so libsametime.so pidgin-libnotify.la
buddynote.so libjabber.so.0 libsilcpurple.so pidgin-libnotify.so
dbus-example.so libjabber.so.0.0.0 libsimple.so psychic.so
idle.so libmsn.so libxmpp.so ssl-nss.so
joinpart.so libmyspace.so libyahoo.so ssl.so
libaim.so libnovell.so libzephyr.so statenotify.so
libbonjour.so liboscar.so log_reader.so tcl.so
libgg.so liboscar.so.0 newline.so
libicq.so liboscar.so.0.0.0 offlinemsg.so
libirc.so libqq.so perl.so
