Comment:

 This is fixed to a great extent in Pidgin 2.6.0, with one caveat.

 In Pidgin 2.6.0, when adding a buddy on XMPP from the authorization
 dialog, if you choose to put them in a group other than the "Buddies"
 group (say "Friends"), you will end up with the buddy in both "Friends"
 and "Buddies". However, if you drag the buddy from "Buddies" to "Friends",
 the two will merge and you will have only one copy in "Friends".

 I hope that made sense; I'm about to go to sleep.
