New description:

 Even in 2.6.2  y! does not work as it is blocked by SSL (my company stops
 SSL connectivity).  Standard Yahoo client connects works without this
 issue.  (tried different proxy connections for SSL,  but company blocks
 SSL connections)

Comment:

 Pidgin does not support that proxy auto-config stuff, which I believe
 you've correctly determined. You will need to set the settings manually
 (either globally or specifically for the Yahoo account on the Proxy tab).
