 Your assumption is correct.  All other applications copy and paste
 properly even with Outlook open.  It seems to have something to do with
 the Microsoft Office clipboard.  When an office application is open, this
 clipboard basically overrides the system clipboard.  The odd thing is that
 the text is actually copied as it can be pasted into Outlook, Chrome, and
 even Pidgin, but it will not paste to other apps such as Notepad++.  If
 Outlook is closed, it has no problem copying and pasting to Notepad++.
