Comment:

 You mean you can only press ctrl-l to clear the history area contents once
 in pidgin and then it fails to work again? When ctrl-l fails does the
 Conversations->Clear menu item still work? Does it still display the
 Ctrl+L shortcut? Does the Help->Debug Window say anything when you press
 ctrl-l when it doesn't work?
