 I have extra info (actually solved my issue)

 I use Pidgin with  the MSN protocol (MSN Passport linked to a gmail
 address). I do not use the http-method.

 I found that, if I set my status in the GMAIL chat client to "invisible"
 this affects Pidgin in a disastrous way. My status becomes "offline" to
 all contacts and I can not override this in Pidgin... also, messages sent
 to me are frequently dropped (as described above), but not always.
