 I was able to work around this issue by setting the "Show system tray
 icon" setting to "Always". (I believe it got set to "Never" when I
 upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, since it introduced the messaging menu that is
 suppose to replace the notification icon.)

 I'll try setting it back to "Never" (with 2.7.1) and see if it recurs.
