 That patch mostly fixes the reported problem in my testing on CentOS 5.

 There are some corner-case issues remaining:

 If Pidgin is started with no notification area, then the notification area
 is added to the panel after the docklet embedding timeout, the docklet
 will embed in the notification area but Pidgin will not realize it has so
 closing the buddy list will quit Pidgin.

 If the notification area is removed while Pidgin is running and docklet is
 embedded, this is not noticed so either Pidgin remains running but with no
 window (if it was already minimized to the docklet), or it will not close
 when buddy list is closed.
