 I also experience this problem (Ubuntu 10.10, standard Pidgin/libpurle
 packages).

 Extra information:

  * I can {{{ping6}}} the affected (IPv6) hosts fine.
  * With Empathy, i can message the problematic hosts, but Empathy appears
 to be defaulting to using IPv4, instead of IPv6.
  * The local network also includes some hosts that only have IPv4
 addresses / presence: Pidgin can communicate with these without problem.
