 Hi.

In pidgin bug #14992 I talk about how emoticon handling can be improved
 generally.

In comment 1 I lay out that a plugin would be nice that does automatic
text replacement based on the "current" theme file.

I propose to use the following theme file structure:
 <filename> <textual representation> <unicode> <shortcut 1> <shortcut 2>
 ... <shortcut n>

 e.g.
 astonished.gif *astonished* 😲 :-O :-o :O :o

The plugin requested in this ticket should replace shortcuts (:-O :-o :O
:o) by the Unicode character (😲) (if available) or by the textual
 representation (*astonished*) as a fallback.
If the unicode is available, the textual representation should be
 replaced, too.

The textual representation comes first in the columns, as the first column
is the one shown by pidgin in the smiley selector,.. and I guess having
the text there is more useful than the unicode glyph, which alone (I mean
the drawing) doesn't tell the user necessarily what it means.
