 Change this globally in system settings.

 Or try starting pidgin that way:
 $ LC_ALL=en_US pidgin

 For convenience copy /usr/share/applications/pidgin.desktop
 to ~/.local/share/applications, and change
 Exec=pidgin to
 Exec=env LC_ALL=en_US pidgin

 To get possible values, run: $ locale -a
