 Multi-party OTR (mpOTR) is an extension of the OTR protocol to allow
 encrypted group chats. It is described at http://www-
 users.cs.umn.edu/~hopper/gotr.pdf, and implementation discussions are
 discussed at https://github.com/ioerror/mpOTR. However, there is no
 existing implementation.

 The protocol has clear privacy benefits, and could be used, for example,
 by small groups organising against oppressive regimes, or just by families
 not wanting to have [http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2014/07/a
 -devastating-leak-for-edward-snowdens-critics/373991/ their intimate
 conversations recorded].

 Because Pidgin is cross-platform, with an easy-to-use interface, it would
 be an excellent place to get a first implementation working.
