 The missing piece is XEP-0115 (http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0115.html),
 which makes clients broadcast a hash of their service information with
 their presence.

 (It *might* be desirable for Pidgin to ask for service discovery even if
 it doesn't get a hash, to support clients that don't implement XEP-0115,
 but that's probably not worth it.)
