This is another one from older GAIM days. (I hope I'm not posting a dupe
 again :)
I'll add a second comment with the full text from SF's tracker.
Latest findings show the following behaviour :
Most often applications crash with "MS Visual C++ Runtime ..." error.
Most often TotalCommander and WinRAR crash. Rarely Explorer.exe. Sometimes
other app, but those are used less often and I couldn't find any common
 criteria for them anyway.
Apparently not all programs are susceptible. For example Mozilla family
 has never crashed like this.
Situation in which a crash can occur:
 - assume one or more of the sensitive applications are running. Best
chances are if that app has been runing for 1/2 hour or more BEFORE pidgin
is started. (or closed and started again for that matter).
I've tried gathering backtraces or something, but I haven't been able to.
From a previous suggestion by a gaim developer, I have a debugger
installed, but it won't catch anything with this type of crash. (and my
skill and understanding with debuggers is very limited).
I can reproduce the problem on different systems, so it's not particular
 to a certain installation.
And yes, it affects 2.0.1 as well.
