Comment:

 This patch is certainly not correct. If we're doing purple idle checking,
 we should know when events happen that would change the state. Those
 events should be calling (potentially indirectly or through signals)
 check_idleness(). I believe we have some of that code already; it's
 apparently not working correctly.

 Sean, you were going to look at this code anyway.
