Comment:

 Permissions on the .purple directory are rw for myself, r only for
 everyone else; prefs.xml has rw for myself only. The directories
 themselves are executable.

 When I hit "Close" in the preferences menu, the debug window only says:

 As for debug messages on startup, these are indicative of any that I could
 find relating to the prefs directory...

 I also found this elsewhere in the startup messages:
 (00:59:55) plugins: /usr/local/lib/purple-2/libjabber.so is not usable
 because the 'purple_init_plugin' symbol could not be found.  Does the
 plugin call the PURPLE_INIT_PLUGIN() macro?


 As for the preferences I was trying to change, they were pretty basic:
 -Interface tab: De-select "Show IMs and chats in tabbed windows"
 -Sounds tab: Change "Method" selection to "No sounds", and de-select any
 selected sounds in the box at the bottom of the window
