Comment:

 Preferences are automatic apply, so the messages about them would be
 immediately after you change them (and a couple seconds after that for
 writing them to the file). What version of the libpurple package are you
 using? Did you at some point prior to upgrading to Gutsy install pidgin
 from source yourself?
