 Have you tried using file compression tools before doing the copy? That
 might help significantly (depending on too many factors to name). Also, if
 you copy back and forth as a way to synchronize multiple
 machines/directories you should look into tools that perform this job
 better than standard copy does, that is tools like rsync and unison.
