Comment:

 I meant IM and I haven't found a protocol that doesn't crash yet.


 However, changing the GTK+ theme to 'Human' from 'clearlooks' does indeed
 appear to fix it!

 P.S. For those in Xubuntu like me, you do Applications->Settings->Settings
 Manager->User Interface to change the theme.
