Comment:

 Do you mean a chat or do you mean an IM? Does it matter what protocol you
 do this on? Presumably it doesn't crash if you don't start a "chat" and/or
 don't type anything into it?

 You can try changing your GTK+ theme (specifically the theme engine) to a
 GTK+ theme that doesn't use clearlooks and seeing if that fixes the crash.
