Comment:

 This sounds to me like the classic symptom of not seeing the Pidgin icon
 in the notification area of the panel.  It should look like a white
 rectangle with a green circle partially over it.  Click the icon and the
 buddy list will appear.  If this works, you need to either use the Quit
 menu option or go into preferences and change "Show system tray icon" to
 "Never" so that closing the buddy list closes pidgin.
