 pidgin is still using GTK+2.

 Many themes (and specifically theme engines) are poor in some scenarios.

 I don't understand the new message icon comment.

 I don't understand the tray icon comment exactly either but assuming XFCE
 is displaying the normal pidgin tray icon (and not some other notification
 icon instead) it should work the way it did before.
